Jonathan Mark "Jonny" Howson (born 21 May 1988) is an English footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Football League Championship team Leeds United. A graduate of Leeds' prolific youth system, he serves as club captain.

Howson was born in Morley and started his professional career at Leeds United. He is the current longest serving player at the club, having served under four different managers and making over 150 appearances since he made his debut in the League Cup in September 2006.

In April 2008, United manager Gary McAllister awarded the captaincy to a nineteen year-old Howson for the league game against Millwall, making him the youngest player to captain the club since the iconic Billy Bremner led the side in the early 1960s. Since 2010, he has regularly captained the side in the absence of Richard Naylor. In July 2011, Howson was made the permanent captain of Leeds United.[2]

Academy

Howson was born in Morley, West Yorkshire and attended Bruntcliffe School.[1][3] Howson came through the Leeds United Academy along with James Milner, Danny Rose and Aaron Lennon and was a regular in the Leeds reserve team pre-2006, scoring a number of goals at that level. On 22 August 2006, Howson was given a squad number (33) and place on the bench for the first team against Chester City in the League Cup, although he did not play. On 18 September 2006 Howson signed a three year deal with the club, pledging his future to the team he has supported since he was a boy.[4]
2006?07

Howson made his debut for the Leeds first team against Barnet in the League Cup on 20 September 2006. The manager who gave Howson his debut Kevin Blackwell was sacked immediately after the game. New manager Dennis Wise handed Howson his league debut in December in the scoreless draw against Hull City. Howson was awarded the Man of the Match award for his terrific league debut[5] In addition, Howson won the plaudits of Wise and vice-captain Shaun Derry. Howson scored his first professional goal in February 2007 against Norwich City. However Howson and Leeds were relegated from The Championship at the end of the 2006?07 season and dropped to the English 3rd tier for the first time in Leeds' history.[6]
2007?08

The start of the 2007?08 season saw the player start a small amount of matches; it was only when Gary McAllister was appointed manager when Howson become a first team regular. Howson famously scored both goals in Leeds' 2?0 victory against Carlisle United in May 2008 which sent the club to the League One Play-off final at Wembley.[7] Leeds lost the final 1?0 against Doncaster Rovers, with the goal coming from Howson's failure to mark goalscorer James Hayter.[8] Howson was voted Leeds' Players' Young Player and Fans' Young Player of the Year at the club's end of season awards.[9] He was also rewarded for his form with new three year contract, extending by a further year if Leeds win promotion to The Championship.[10]
2008?09

The start of the 2008?09 season saw a drop in form for the youngster. The emergence of starlet Fabian Delph saw the number of games for Howson restricted. When Gary McAllister was sacked and replaced by Simon Grayson, Howson was played in centre midfield again with Fabian Delph moving to the left wing. In February 2009 Howson signalled a possible return to form and first-team selection with both goals in Leeds' 2?0 victory over Cheltenham Town. He gradually re-established himself as a first team regular with Fabian Delph being moved out to a wide left midfield position. Howson finished the season in a permanent central midfield place alongside Neil Kilkenny and started in both of the club's two unsuccessful play-off semi-finals against Millwall.[11]
2009?10

In August 2009, Howson was appointed the new Leeds vice-captain and due to the absence of club captain, Richard Naylor.[12] Howson started the season well, creating a solid central midfield partnership with Michael Doyle and captaining the team to nine straight wins in all competitions. Howson was also the youngest Leeds captain since Billy Bremner[13] Howson lost the captains armband when current club captain Richard Naylor made his return from injury against Carlisle United.

Howson scored his second goal of the season for Leeds with a magnificent long range strike with his left foot against Oldham in the FA Cup. When Bradley Johnson was injured Neil Kilkenny came into Leeds' starting lineup, this meant that Howson was played in a right wing position with Doyle and Kilkenny the favoured central midfield partnership. Howson was dropped in favour of Bradley Johnson against Stockport County. On 3 January, he set up Jermaine Beckford's winner a 1?0 shock win over old rivals Manchester United, thus eliminating the reigning Premier League winners for the first time at this stage.[14]

Howson's 3rd goal of the season came early on in the game against Wycombe Wanderers with a long range strike. Howson was at the right side of the midfield for Leeds when they earned a 2?2 draw against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on 23 January 2010. He was also captain of the side with Richard Naylor missing the game through injury. After playing for Leeds against Carlisle United, Howson was dropped from the starting lineup for the next game against Leyton Orient.

Howson scored his 4th goal of the season in the Yorkshire derby against Huddersfield Town, with the game finishing 2?2. Howson played an important part in getting Leeds promoted when he came on as a substitute in the final game of the season and scored a superb equalising goal against Bristol Rovers. Leeds went on to win the game 2?1. Howson played an instrumental part as Leeds were promoted to the Football League Championship after finishing in 2nd place in League 1 and thus earning automatic promotion.
2010?11

Howson started the first game of the season against Derby County and played a big part in leeds' equaliser, passing after a great run for Luciano Becchio to fire in from close range. His first goal of the season, came in Leeds' second match of the season in the League Cup against Lincoln City, Howson was also captain for Leeds in this match. Howson gained another assist for Leeds with a long range cross field ball against Millwall which was then finished by striker Davide Somma. Howson's second goal of the season and his first of the league campaign came in a 5?2 loss to Barnsley.[15] On 30 October, Howson provided an assist for Max Gradel, Howson then scored his 3rd, 4th and 5th goal's of the season with his first hatrick of his senior career in Leeds' 4?1 away win against Scunthorpe United.[16][17] Howson scored his 6th goal of the season against Coventry City in the following game.[18] Howson's 8th goal of the season came against Portsmouth[19]

Howson scored his 7th goal of the season against Burnley.[20] Howson's 8th goal of the season came against Portsmouth[21] 8 January, Howson captained Leeds a 1?1 draw against Arsenal, Leeds were 1?0 up when Robert Snodgrass scored a second half penalty, Arsenal equalised in the 90th minute when Cesc Fabregas scored a penalty.[22] Howson reached his 150th league game milestone for Leeds against Coventry City on 5 February 2011.[23] Howson's 9th and 10th goals of the season came in the same game in the 5-2 win against Doncaster Rovers.[24] Howson was nominated as one of The Championship players of the month for March.[25] On 2 April, Howson scored his 11th goal of the season against Nottingham Forest.[26] 5 April Howson won The Championship Player Of The Month award for March.[27] Richard Naylor reclaimed the captains armband off Howson when he returned to the Leeds starting lineup against Reading. 30 April 2011 Howson won Leeds' Young Player Of The Year award for the 2010-11 season.[28]
2011?12

On 31 July 2011, Howson was made permanent club captain, replacing the departed Richard Naylor, with his first game in his official role coming in Leeds' 3?2 pre-season victory over Newcastle United.[29] Howson's first game as official captain of Leeds came on the opening day of the season as Leeds suffered a 3?1 defeat against Southampton.[30] Howson was sent off in the second half for two bookable offences in a defeat against Middlesbrough, teammate Max Gradel was also sent off for Leeds in the same match.[31] Leeds United chief executive Shaun Harvey revealed on 29 September Leeds had offered Howson a new contract extension to stay at the club beyond his existing deal.[32] After speculation regarding him signing a new contract at Leeds, it was reported that Howson was set to turn down Bolton Wanderers in order to sign a new deal at Leeds.[33]

Howson scored his 1st goal of the season on 29th November in Leeds' emphatic 4-0 win against Nottingham Forest.[34] Howson picked up a knee injury against Millwall on 3 December 2011 which meant he had to be substituted in the first half.[35] Whilst the injury wasn't as serious as initially feared, the knee injury would still rule Howson out for a large part of the season.[36] Despite the injury being played down by Leeds, on 14 December Leeds Chairman Ken Bates revealed Howson would be out injured for several months due to the knee injury.[37]
International career
England U21

In March 2010, Howson was watched by England under-21 manager Stuart Pearce.[38] On 6 February 2011, Howson received his first call-up to the squad for a friendly match against Italy. Howson made his debut during the game ? a 1?0 defeat ? entering the field as a 60th minute substitute.[39][40] 23 March 2011 Howson received his second call up to the Under 21's squad for the match against Denmark Under 21's.[41]

On 3 May 2011 Howson was called up to the provisional England under-21 squad for the European Under 21 Championships.[42] However when the final squad was trimmed to 23 players, Howson was left out of the final lineup. However he was placed on standby for the Championships and could be called up at any time.[43]
