An excellent little essay on free kicks and the advantages ceded to the defending team

If you were inventing football from scratch tomorrow, the idea of allowing the defending team to position any number of players between a free kick and a goal (at their leisure) would eem ridiculous. We're just used to it. It's really crap though.
