Can't see them sacking Colin without having someone lined up. Also:
A) As far as I know they haven't appointed a caretaker so will be looking to appoint someone in day's rather than weeks

And

B) They have obviously had something arranged, else he wouldn't have been in for talks less than 24 hours after Colin's sacking. Doesn't appear to be any application process, as they already seem to know who they want.
