Norwich were perhaps lucky not to be down to 10 men after just eight minutes when Grant Holt raised his arm in the face of Benoit Assou-Ekotto.
Some refs would have shown a red and while a yellow card would probably have been the right decision, Michael Oliver infuriated Tottenham by keeping both cards in his pocket.
Perhaps Oliver's leniency had something to do with the fact that when officiating Norwich at Reading last season, he controversially dismissed Holt ? with that red card being rescinded.
The other moment of controversy in the first half came from one of Van der Vaart's free-kicks when William Gallas, positioning himself in the area to meet the cross, was clipped by Morison.
Gallas screamed for a penalty and while the officials missed the incident, Morison was fortunate as he clearly made contact. But in the end, these two flashpoints did not prove to be crucial
