Techie question. Pc at home when it boots up, will sometimes mute the sound

When I click on say a song or a movie link it will play but silently

If I open up the volume properties, the window comes up and shows you the levels to move up and down, but they are frozen and you can't move them

The only way to get the sound to work is reboot the machine and hope it loads up the sound properties properly (although I did that 6 times the other night and gave up)

Anyone know how to stop this happening?

Someone told me to get rid of a few music applications cos thats what is doing it, as they will all try to make themselves the default player. I've done that and it still does it
