I think you can compare it to Leeds football club

Spend spend spend believing the good times would go on forever, then when they don't, find yourself with a massive wage bill you cannot afford.

And of course all covered by murky waters and fiddled figures. Then find you have to sell off your assets at a reduced price and sack people to try and stop the spiraling debt.
