It's an old ruse

Get a tin of tuna or pilchards and wipe the juice on a lightbulb with a cloth or piece of kitchen towel.

Then, every time the light is switched on, it's rank stink city and no-one has the first idea where the smell is coming from. (Unless they know the ruse of course).
