Yes, bowlers do have to add variation, but it's not about 'out thinking' batsmen per se. They just have to hope the batsman mis-hits it and gets caught or heaves and misses to get bowled/ LBW.

Not the same in tests where the batsmen are only looking to punish the bad balls- not EVERY ball. And the bowlers have to have a plan in order to get someone out- outswing, then inswing/ bouncer than pitch up, etc.
