Yes, one tends to do that in panic. My boxer once took off

after a hare on Newmarket Heath, heading straight for the road about half a mile away. I proper shat myself as I took off after him as fast as I could in wellies and shouting for all I was worth. Fortunately he was distracted by a tractor before he got to the road and took off after that. Eventually got him back though.
