Moneyball------new film with Brad Pitt..... very relevent to NCFC

I think its out in the UK at the end of this week.

I know most of you wont be interested in a movie about baseball but the underlying concepts are highly relevent to teams like Norwich City.

It covers a scientific method of evaluating players better than other teams.

The bottom line is is allowed a team like Oakland (think NCFC) to compete with teams like the NYY (think Man City) while having a small fraction of their budget.

The film doesnt go into much details but a lot of the theory is based on an amazing guy called Bill James

Basically a very clever stat nerd who was able to rationalize a players ability and spot value when others couldnt.

John Henry (current liverpool owner) took him to Boston in 2003 where they won their first World series in 86 years in 2004. Then did it again in 2007.

The situation in Boston was they had both the money and the supers stat nerds tell them the value of a player and what was needed to win a championship

So how does all that stuff relate to NCFC and Paul Lambert.

The truth is, like Oakland A's, we will never have the budget of most of the clubs in the PL.

We could of chosen the normal path of promoted clubs in either finding older expereinced players let go by the bigger clubs or briging in foreign players who dont really care about the club.

We arnt going to win the league, we arnt even probably going to finish in the top 10.

If we manage to stay up we will almost certainly be the premier league champions in one category.

Least amount of money spent PER POINT.

There is no doubt we have done as good as we could do with the resources we have.

If a team has unlimited funds, surely its easy to go out and buy great players, and if any dont work out, buy more.

If you are NCFC we have to find unproven gems in the lower divisions, we have no choice.

The fact we are competing with established PL teams is nothing short of amazing.

OTBC.
