The deal given to people installing solar panels was crazy.

If you were rich enough to have 15K hanging around, lucky enough to have a south facing home and were willing to put solar panels on your house the energy companies were forced to pay you well above the going rate for electricity. (the extra being subsidised by everyone else of course)
