Well, Git, this is an interesting one.

As a result of doing the Guardian column, I get invited to go/asked to do all sorts of things to do with the UK trans community (mainly media and political stuff), but there's very little money in blogging and none in all the public speaking stuff I do, so I still am an unemployed poet in a hovel (well, a shared house).

The same goes for some of my friends who, to all appearances, are doing far better in the media than me! That's why you see all these hyper-privileged people as columnists even in left-wing publications - if you're going to devote yourself to it full-time then you need a LOT of money behind you!
