In a very humourless fashion I would just point out that...
...bigger clubs than us are being rumoured to be offering bigger fess than we could afford on Ashton. So I do feel slightly vindicated there.
I don't think it's very likely that Joe Cole will come to play for us. Would love to see it however.

Of course it's not bloody Ashton
If it had been him you'd have seen me backpedalling frantically long before now, believe me.
Funnily enough I dreamt about the new striker playing for us last night. He scored.

Er I'm pretty pleased.

Don't think everyone on here will be. But then I don't think there's any signing (within our budget) that would please everyone on here.
Incidentally I'm right and Old Git and SCC25 are wrong. In that it's not Ashton.

no chance of himcoming ere

to far away to move to
bigger clubs in for him
to much wedge out of price range
shame we didnt go for him in the summer when he would have been cheaper
be intresting to see how he does in the prem innit

Indeed. Was obvious last week, is obvious this week.

Shame SCC25 and Old Git aren't around. Or maybe they've given up on this one now.

I will.

You keep banging on about how we'll get Ashton. But we won't. So you're not always right.

Give up, SCC, old Eeyore won't stop until you concede that there is NO, NONE, ZERO, ZIPPO

chance of Ashton ever ever ever setting one of his talented feet within 100 miles of Carra and that even suggesting that we might have some vague hopes is like saying we are guaranteed to sign Rooney and Henry together, and have Rooney's tarts staffing the physio room.
Posted By: Old Git on December 2nd 2004 at 16:34:13
He's signing for spurs you buffoon.
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
which was all I ever said was happening (ie he was bound to sign for a bigger club than us).
And I'm quite looking forward to reading your grudging acknowledgement that I was Right and you were Wrong.

not in the least
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
it's not often you're vindicated so soon after a board disagreement.
You I notice have backpedalled faster than Lance Armstrong on a rewound video. Earlier this week you were convinced he would sign for us. What's changed?
Posted By: Tricky Hawes on December 2nd 2004 at 16:43:43
right.

which one of us tends to be right?
I'm telling you - no Ashton.... ;o)

the idea of him coming to us remains as laughable as it was when people first mooted it.

thank you.
Summer: Safri, Jonson, Charlton, Docherty, Helveg.
January: Ashton? Dawson? Reid?
Yeah right.

I'm pretty cheerful. Actually feeling quite optimistic about our chances

but we won't be beating off clubs like Spurs, Everton, Liverpool to sign the most highly-rated championship players in jan.
At the moment a few folk on this board are higlighting the most promising two or three players in the championship (with the exception of Bent, for obvious reasons) and speculating we might get them in Jan.
We'll be going for players with lower profiles than that.

Oh no, Ashton will NEVER come to us, cos he'll know that we're DOOMED
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
and that we're a crap club with no facilities and on investment and no decent players that no-one wants to play for, and he knows that if he moves east of Peterborough all his teeth will fall out and his penis will turn green and he'll never score again, and no-one will EVER sign for us who's ANY good cos we're BOUND to go back down again. Eee-orrr.

We never had a cat in hell's chance for Ashton
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
the only puzzle is why people on here started talking about it. He's probably the first fizzy league player in the queue for the premiership, and was never about to jump ship in jan to a club expected to shortly leave it.
Posted By: Tricky Hawes on December 2nd 2004 at 08:59:19
Is your nickname Eeyore?

What a doom and gloom merchant. FFS. Bellamy went to Coventry, didn't he? Don't write Ashton off yet. It all depends who else comes in for him (probably not many except the promoted clubs), what Crewe ask, how he plays in December, how much he wants to leave, how we're placed in early Jan relative to the other contenders, whether we'd agree a relegation clause in his contract ...
Lots of possibilities. Stop being so gloomy.
Posted By: Old Git on December 2nd 2004 at 10:54:57
I'm not being gloomy, just demonstrating a little realism
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
There's plenty of strikers out there we could realistically aim at who could do a job. (I think we've been a little unlucky that both Macken and Johannson have finally broken into their first teams, for example, but we realistically had a chance of getting either of them.)
But Ashton happen to be one that was, is and will be out of our league. There probably isn't another nationwide striker who's as highly rated as him. Not one. Therefore he will not go to a relegation-favourite who don't have much cash to spend.

Dean Ashton & Jan transfer window....
Reload Forum Index Follow-ups Reply to this Message
Have seen some questioning whether this would be a good signing as Ashton is unproven at prem level. They need their heads testing yes he is unproven but who can we afford that is proven at that level, nobody. Plus if we go down Ashton is guaranteed to with hucks get us the goals we need to get straight back up. He consistently scores loads for a sub standard div1 team and has 15 already this season. I just hope no other team beats us to him he wont come cheap but he is worth the gamble.
