That's not true simply because of

volume. But if you change that to say everything you post MAY be read by someone then I'd say that is accurate.

They must use systems like Echelon, although far more sophisticated these days, to detect patterns and then zoom in communication patterns which get highlighted by the systems.

I'd imagine modern day spy games are often about code breaking, more as in recognising seemingly innocent patterns than decrypting encrypted messages.
