Because they were in athletics clubs and working out young while the rest were

studying at their good schools for jobs they could get, looking at careers rather than feeling like they were the scum of the earth and falling for the wanna be famous / rich thing which afflicts all the poor.

And because a lot of them were American from poor families and that was the only way they would ever, ever receive a college education.
