I don't think it was obviously such a howler from the ref

I think we all know - if you wave your arms about in the box, and the ball hits them, you're liable to give a pen away. Doesn't matter whether you're appealing for a free kick or doing an impression of a pterodactyl. (Or which way you're facing.)
