That if the players arms are by his side, or if there is no way of the player avoiding the ball, then its not handball.

If like Kean says the player has his arms in the air, then he is asking for trouble.

Goes back to the argument that you play to the whistle. If it was a free kick, the referee would have blown for it. If play goes on and your stood there waving your arms around appealing, then you should have no complaints if the ball hits you and the referee gives a penalty. If you want to appeal, wait for the ball to go dead.
