Of course, atheism is just another religion - you can't prove God exists and you can't prove S/He doesn't exist so you decide which way you want to live your life and act accordingly. Neither choice is more or less rational than the other, and to focus on historical accuracy or otherwise of religious texts misses the point somewhat: it's not "did this actually happen" but "does this myth/story add meaning/context to life" that's the really important question.
It's a bit different, of course, if you're born into a repressive society which insists you believe a certain way or burns you at the stake/similar/equivalent (cf England up to fairly recently, parts of US up to, well, today, parts of the Middle East up to today, etc etc etc). Then you'd better pay lip service to some religion or else.
The differences which cause wars are cultural/racial - religion is used by both sides as justification, just as it was in Northern Ireland, to try to make it look less ugly than it is.
But to your point, No-God Botherers are just as annoying as God Botherers, and the lot should be locked in a room with each other until the tea and crumpets run out.
