we used to not book but just find a B&B with a vacancy.. pop in around 5pm

and basically used to offer them half what the room rate was. 9 times out of 10 they'd take it as preferable to having the room empty.

Also they used to have a thing at Liverpool St which was like a bucket shop for hotel rooms... last minute bookings
