course, I thought you were talking specifically about their schooling

but if its something passed down from father to son so to speak then it's surely something more deeply ingrained. It probably stems originally from most people here being descendents of desperate folk who emigrated from Europe with absolutely nothing less than 100 years ago.
Not to mention that Spain turned its prisonors into emigrants to get shot of them
