I use parted magic on pc's if people ever have trouble

you can sometimes mount failing hard drives on that, get what you want off them, and then accept your hard is near enough dead

That sometimes works as a quick scan too

I've considered getting a linux pen drive, which just has ubuntu's os on it. Would be something handy to carry around (they are ?15 squids though)
