you probably wouldn't notice the difference between the photos you take with either. Or be able to take full advantage of the extra functionality on the 5100.

The one big advantage the 5100 has is the ability to use the LCD adjustable screen for taking photos in crowded areas, ie you can lift the camera up over everyone's head and still see what the camera sees. Whether that is worth ?200 depends on where you want to use the camera. If you won't be using it at lots of weddings for example, buy the 3100 and invest the ?200 in a zoom lens.
