Morning graphic designer type bods - help needed......

I am aware that you can do something with an image, so that it will automatically adjust to fit the area needed - how do I go about this? Is it a certain file type?

I need to set an image to this format so that it will fit automatically into the likes of Facebook and Twitter for a client - who does not have the ability to amend the images themselves.
