Depends on your opinion of the EU really.

Turkey has been a major ally of the UK for a long while now, and Britain has been selling them a significant amount of arms for many years now, knowing full well they will be used against the Kurdish population and to quell any anti-governmental action.

So if you believe in the EU as a positive force for political good, then Turkey shouldn't be admitted - as you say, its human rights record is abominable.

However, if you conceive of the EU as an elitist cartel, then I don't think the country's human rights record makes any difference, it's all about economics. And are the Turkish government really that much worse than the Italian or British ones? Or is it just that the Turkish tend to attack their own people, whereas we prefer to target the Arabic nations?
