I'm just catching up with the astonishing "PK speaks out on Education" debate

And I suspect you've hit the nail on the head - he's having some sort of class identity crisis: born middle(ish) but really wants to be working - I fear he may be getting grief from his work mates (although he was a bit like this before) for not being working class enough.

For PK: my political opinions weren't formed at college, but then again they weren't on the factory floor either (they rarely are): I read books and debated (vociferously sometimes) with friends & colleagues.
