when we failed to qualify for the World Cup in the US OF A. We attempted to qualify for that world cup with a manager who had a specific style of direct football with no Plan B. It was obvious then that the whole system needed to be reviewed and a huge emphasis placed on technical skill. It's with a certain irony that Norway qualified ahead of us playing even more direct football, however direct football always ends up taking you so far. Norway went out early.
18 years on we have tried many different managers and systems, none of them came close to winning anything and still the root of the problem is not looked at. Instead people are too busy hailing what a great job Tony Pulis is doing at Stoke even though he is promoting a brand of football that is responsible for many of the problems in our national team.
