If I want to play DVD's on a laptop but use the TV screen

Or even watch a (cough) streamed NCFC match, what do I need to connect the two?

The laptop is quite new has a HDMI connector it as does the TV screen, so I presume I'll need a lead with HDMI things each end. Do I need anything for the sound, such as plugging something into the headphone socket on the laptop and then into the TV.

And will the laptop be clever and recognise that a TV screen is linked up?
