Ronnie Lott, playing for San Francisco 49ers in the 80s, broke his finger so badly he was effectively out for the season. To reduce his absence to 3 games he had the end joint amputated.
In US football, there are even rules about how a cast should be padded to enable players to return to training and playing before the cast is removed.
And finally, as heroic as they were, Mark Wright and Terry Butcher should never have been allowed to play for England while they had blood streaming out of their heads.
