But you touch on one point which is brilliant about McNally. He essentially inherited a

squad which was largely comprised of loan players who were only taking money out of the club. Absolutely no capital whatsoever, then relegated and therefore a dramatic drop in income with no saleable assets.

And still he was able to allow first Gunn, then Lambert, to carefully and gradually rebuild a complete permanent squad, first with freebies and cheapies, then gradually doing a few deals and being able to spend a little bit more.

And the amazing continued support of the home fans must have helped that in no small manner.
