The winner of the race depends quite heavily on the kind of race.

So Cavendish has quite a narrow speciality as far as that goes; he is undoubtedly by far the best in the world at it, and maybe the best ever.

But no, he isn't an overall specialist. The Olympic road race doesn't usually seem to favour sprinters, it suits the likes of Gilbert who are more independent of their team and can take part in breakaways.
