I did the same school trip as a 15-year-old, going to France and Belgium

Ypres, Verdun, Vimy and others. Incredibly moving, and made a really important impression on me. The thing I remember most, actually, is not so much the dignified Allied memorials with their lavish individual headstones, but the German memorial at Langemarck, which was small, with most of the bodies put in a mass grave beneath a stone box, and the others buried vertically, six to eight under one grave because the Belgians wouldn't allow them to lease any more space.
