I think it's addictive. I'm sure I read something in New Scientist that suggested that Ca

psaicinoids have an addictive quality.

Normally I would never have something that spicy in public, because, well, it's not pretty. But, as I said, I'd had rather too much to drink.

But I love it at home, where there's just Mrs B to look at me like I'm an idiot. She knows what I'm like. I have grown chilis in the past (not for a couple of years now, but I still have a stock of dried supermondo spicy chilis) which gave me a taste for it.

It's very much a pleasure/pain thing - it certainly does hurt, but there's pleasure in it as well. Plus, there's a difference between a small amount of a very hot chili, and a large amout of a fairly hot chili which is what the Macho Vindaloo and Stella boys get once they've finished racially abusing an Indian waiter.

I once grew a lemony chili, I forget the name of the variety, which had a really delicate lemon flavour for about five seconds, and then it kicked one's brain out through one's ears. It was lovely. Really tremendous.
