To be fair they have uncovered stuff like cheating in sports and corruption in politics that the police would never have discovered.
The fact they "out" people probably makes cheats more wary of commiting the crimes.
Its a fine balance of power.
The journos get a bit cocky/arrogant and start doing stuff which is beyond the law. (and public decency) just to get the story.
I just fear the backlash will lead to over the top legislation that will curb their ability to investigate people in power.
Long term, we should be more worried about that than a few corrupt journos tapping into phones.
