Hard drive problem

Just been trying to access something on my external hard drive and instead of a list of folders like there usually is, it has about 50 icons all called d, e or f or some other stupid name and when you click on one it gives a list of all the possible places you might open it and ofcourse nothing works. Anyone know what that's all about?
