What the old man said on a cold and lonely night.

I am, I am, the man said
But these voices
They make their own choices
As they rattle in my head

Mary she?s scary
And likes to play with knives
Dave he?s brave
He wants to save lives

A bit like Jesus, oh Jesus! As we all know
Solemnly intones in his old halo
Napoleon on the other hand
Wants to conquer all known land

Mohammed, now he?s a funny one
As it depends on what side of the ?ent the ear?s on
To the Occidental ear he?s a bit like ?Poly
To the Oriental ear he?s very holy

But here comes Dawkins with his boxing glove
It?s genes not God that we should love
And who?s that sitting on Darwin?s knee?
It?s his great, great Grandad Chimpanzee

The man?s eyes open, he sits up straight
Why am I having this debate?
I like it simple, good or bad
It?s not Mary and Dave that makes me mad

I?ve been like that that since the world was young
When as a piece of algae I was flung
Off some rock or in some pool
From that beginning grew this old fool

So let me lie in my own bed
There are only two sides to this head
The rest can wait til my swansong
When all these voices will be gone
