The best one's for me are those that cared about you as a

person and would go out of their way to help or back you up when necessary. In turn if asked you would go the extra yard for them when asked. Unfortunately those type of people are no longer the type bigger firms HR looks for as managers these day. Managers are more of an administrator acting as directed by them with little discretion.
