talking of begging, just how much can beggars make?

there used to be a blind bloke who stood on the steps of the metro station outside my office (he's still there in fact). I stood and watched him one day for about 20 minutes and he ranked in a good 6-7 quid, and this in a country where the most you're likely to get is 10p at a time
