I could ask again for an explanation of the difference between 'in itself' and 'in and of itself', and you could patronise me for a bit before eventually explaining?
I hadn't heard the expression until the last couple of years and now everyone uses it. I'm sure it's fine and correct, I just can't grasp the distinction between the two.
Will Self's used it, so it may belong to the correct-but-a-wee-bit-showy-offy?
