Ken Clarke has got himself in a pickle here - particularly in his suggestion that 'date rape' can be a lesser offence than 'serious rape' (whatever that may be).

However there is a kernel of truth in what he says about relative seriousness. The offence of dragging a woman off the streets and having sex with her against her will is not the same as a 17 year old and a 15 year old having consensual intercourse.

However, both are called 'rape'.
