Can someone explain "laying" in betting to me in simple terms.

Lots of people seem to think that Paul Lambert will be the next West Ham manager. I am fairly certain that he will not.

As I understand it I can make some money by betting against this event, and this is called Laying (as opposed to backing). Yes?

So how much money would I need to risk to make anything? I had a look on Betfair last night and it made my skull throb.
