My mum got a four figures bill last September

Couldn't work out what the Revenue had done as her retirement income was roughly the same as the previous tax year. Turned out they'd "lost" her date of birth which messed up some sort of calculation of income they do.

She was fraught with worry about it, and just wanted to pay up to get them off her back. I wouldn't let her pay it, we wrote a letter with a "what's changed since last years tax return " approach and three months we ended up with small refund.
