I ditched Thunderbird a long time ago in favour of Apple's mail app just because it wasn't working well. I've been wanting an alternative to mail for ages and when Sparrow came out it looked perfect but originallly it was gmail only. Sparrow is very minimalist so if you have loads of folders and sub folders and labels and stuff it might not be for you. Have a look at their website and blog and it might help you make a decision on it.
