There are a number of factors - but it all boils down to an acute housing shortage:-
1) There are over 12,000 on the housing waiting lists for the 3 local authorities
2) in 2007 house prices had increased to 9 times average earnings from 4 times over a 10 year period
3) every year nearly twice as many social houses are sold or demolished than are built.
So the only long-term way to make homes possible - bought or rented - for people entering the housing market is to build more houses. You & I may be OK but every year it will get harder and harder to find a home for those less fortunate.
I'm not being political - just lobbing a few facts to help the discussion along!
