As a film-maker, I strongly disagree with you.

You are not looking at good films in much the same way as you claim people underappreciate books.

There are good films and there are bad films. In the same way, there are good books and there are bad books.

You can have a bad adaptation of a good book and a good adaptation of a bad book.
