you need a special tool to be able to put the chain links back together

it's only small and cheap probably, but it's not as easy a job as it seems. If it's not expensive, get a shop to do it or even better, a friend who'll be appeased with a beer.
Probably worth getting a full tuning for the bike too - brakes, gear changes etc etc. I wouldn't pay more than 50 quid for that though
