Can someone please explain to me the difference here?

(Modified from post below)

For those that don't know already, I'm a radio DJ on a regional station in the East Midlands. Not playing the big I AM or anything, just trying to draw an analogy here...

Radio is about entertaining, informing and educating. Commercial radio is also about maximising your audience to ultimately increase revenue of the radio station. Similar lines can be drawn with football. The better you perform the more successful you become, which in turn increases income.

If I under-perform (meaning if I keep losing listeners to my show) I can expect to be dropped from my time slot or the schedules altogether. However, that's the Programme Director's decision to drop me, not mine.. (notmean?) I have to/ and will continue doing what I do in that time slot, until I am informed otherwise. If I'm not performing to the best of my ability (and although my colleagues continue to encourage me and say I'm doing a good job), but my listeners ring me up constantly to hurl abuse at me and tell me how crap I am...how on god's earth is that going to make me more confident and perform better? Sure I can choose to not answer the phone, but then people can stop me in the street and tell me the same thing.

So what I'm trying to understand here is, why is football, and Flem's example any different? People criticise Flem for his performance, but it's Worthy's decision to pick, and continue doing so until he decides otherwise. Do you expect Flem to hold his hands up to the boss after a few below par performances and ask to be dropped or transfer listed?

You play devils advocate here. Why are the analogies I've drawn vastly different?

If you see a parallel here, why the public condemnation of a single person, or few individuals of something you otherwise love and are so passionate about?
