Can someone give me PC help too please while you're saving Suggs?

I got some update from Microsoft for Windows 7 on my netbook and now it won't connect to the internet, either by net cable or wireless.
Although it appears to be connected to the normal network, it says it's connected to an unknown network and "doesn't have a valid IP address"
I've been through loads of forums and tried various solutions to what appears a common problem, but none of them have worked. Any ideas?
