Pennant in his British Zoology declared there was proof that bears infested Scotland

as late as the year 1057, when one of the Gordon family, in reward for his valour in killing a fierce bear, was directed by the king to carry three bears' heads on his banner. Were the story true, it would be the last record that can be discovered of the existence of the bear in Britain. But the statement is apparently based on a mistake.
