happened to my ipod as well after my bike crash so I suspected it was the drive being shagged.
Yours could be due to a broken wire or something, but more likely the drive has died, especially if you've dropped it a few times.
You might have some joy here though. The Bio Bio market has stalls where they repair ipods and for a couple of quid they'll open it and take a look, and for some more quids they'll replace the drive (it's easy), but your music will be gone obviously.
Back up, back up and back up. Failing that print a list of your entire library so you can dowload again from SLSK or whatever at least
