much of the US' stability though is surely down to large wealth

a reasonably (very) small underclass of paupers. If that wealth is threatened - it is slowly being undermined by devaluation in reponse to massive foreign debt - then things would be very different. However, the US is a special case due to being able to provide most of its own needs.
In the majority of the world there are huge amounts of poor people who're starting to wonder why the hell they and their forefathers have all been poor despite slaving their guts out. There will be more revolutions, there's absolutely no doubt. I really believe we're entering an era of social unheaval. I just hope that the outcome is positive.
